Suit up Bitches

This week I want to talk tarot suits.

The minor arcana (not the fancy picture cards) is made of 4 suits each numbered 1 through 10 with some royalty thrown in. In terms of tarot that it this is the equivalent of your iCal and diary. It’s the day to day present shit you have going on. It’s going to give you insight on the small things. Each suit also is associated with an element which if you’re familiar with them from astrology (hello to any star nuts out there) it will give you a leg up with reading. If not it’s not going to hurt you not knowing.

So there are 4 suits to a tarot deck – pentacles, cups, wands and swords. Sometimes each suit has a different name depending on what deck you’re looking at. Sometimes wands are batons or rods, pentacles are coins or disks. It’s like eggplant and aubergine same thing different name.

So lets suit up.

Pentacles is the suit associated with Earth. It’s all things that need growing, nurturing and sometimes the need to do some adulting. To me it pops up a lot in work, financial and family spreads. Now this suit isn’t normally associated with family but for me it pops up a lot with things to do with families. My favorite card in this suit is Queen of Pentacles. She’s gonna remind you to look after yourself and do the grown up shit you need to do. Maybe even get your shit together at work.

Cups is a suit associated with water. It’s emotional, creative and bringing the feels both big and little. To me it talks about things that flow in your life. When I read the cards I look at how the cups are sitting, if there is water how it moves through the picture. If the card is inverted where the water drains from. For example 10 of cups. The cups form a rainbow over the couple and playing kids. It’s essentially a happily ever after card. Everything is coming up Milhouse.

Wands is associated with fire. It’s all about taking action, the stuff that burns inside you. Passion, raw energy, being forward and sometimes it’s a little sexy. I think of it as the ‘sticks’ in the pictures deck are torches for what’s going on. What’s it lighting up in the picture or what’s it burning if the card is reversed. For example in the 7 wands for my deck there are a bunch of wands facing someone with a wand. To me that’s a mob with torches coming for someone holding their ground. So you have to hold your ground and stick to what you believe in.

Lastly swords is associated with air. It’s the stuff you can’t see and for me the hardest suit to connect with. It’s concepts like courage, intelligence, control and power. I like to look at what the swords are doing in the picture. Who are they effecting and if they’re potentially harming. For example the 2 of swords in my deck is a blind folded woman holding two swords crossed, one blade on either shoulder. To me that says you have a choice to make and if you make it in a rash way you may end up making things worse or causing harm.

So, there you go. That’s my overview of the tarot suits. Now they aren’t super traditional and if you got on the Googles it’d probably contradict me on some stuff but this is how I read the cards. I’m a bit more go with your gut intuitive. Everyone gets something a little different from the cards.

Next week we talk royalty….
